Neradová, Eliška ; Blinková Pelánová, Eva (advisor) ; Mocná, Dagmar (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with the analysis of three texts by Julius Zeyer (Dům U tonoucí hvězdy, Na pomezí cizích světů, Miss Olympia). The work aims to analyze and interpret the motifs in connection with the fantastic genre of literature. The motifs include for example figures of women and a motif of a star or fire. The thesis also deals with the subject of the literary context of the author and the classification of his work in terms of a literary movement. The interpretation of Zeyer's texts is based on Tzvetan Todorov's fantasy concept presented in the study The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre. Eva Krásová: Émile Benveniste and the role of sens My thesis "Émile Benveniste and the role of sens" is a monographic study of the life work of Émile Benveniste (1902-1977) through the role that the concept of meaning (sens) takes in his thought. I adopt the methodology defined by K. Kœrner as "historiography of language sciences", and thus my perspective on Benveniste's work is mainly chronological and developmental. First part of the thesis concentrates on theoretical foundations of Benveniste's thought in the school of Paris (A. Meillet and M. Bréal), Prague (R. Jakobson and V. Skalička) and Copenhagen (texts around 1939). I point out the concept of language system in diachrony in A. Meillet's thinking and in Prague school and present a hypothesis about the role of Émile Bneveniste in their contact during the International congresses of linguists. This results into a description of the perspective of meaning as it was presented in Benveniste's 1962 lecture "Levels of linguistic analysis". Second part deals with Benveniste's concept linguistics of discours. First chapter explains the main concepts of Benveniste's theory of language: semiotics and semantics or the semiotical and the semantical (le/la sémiotique, sémantique), enunciation (énonciation), appropriation (appropriation) and the theory...
Space-time breakdown in Julio Cortázar's fantastic tales
Krejčová, Veronika ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Škodová, Denisa (referee)
As the title may reveal, my work will focus on space-time breakdowns in Julio Cortázar's (1914-1984) oeuvre. This Argentinian writer's work is centered mainly on the fantastic genre, specifically on tales. He is one of the most important representants of this genre in the zone of Río de la Plata, although for the most of his life he lived in Paris, where also many of his works were written. With help of other literary critics and theorists, I will try to define the space-time breakdowns in his creation. Tzvetan Todorov in his The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, distinguishes between three main categories: the strange, the fantastic and the marvelous. Another critic, Ana María Barrenechea, in her a little bit more vital theory divides the fantastic into these three categories: the natural, the unnatural and the mixture of both. As an example I will use four of Cortázar's tales. On those, I will apply the mentioned theories, nevertheless I will also point out the possible lack of clarity and obsolescence in them and will try to offer some new alternative solutions. David Roas, Spanish critic of fantastic literature, will be a great help. Is the space or time important in the literature? And what is that Cortázar's Fantastic feeling? I'll try to answer these questions and...
